“Yunshuxiajuan”: The 2022 Asian Games ceremonial costumes are designed by Wu Haiyan
A few days ago, the ceremonial clothing for the Hangzhou Asian Games was released. The design theme is “Yunshuxia Volume”, which is full of strong oriental charm.
The ceremonial clothing includes a set of award ceremony clothes (women’s clothing), a set of award tray bearer clothes (women’s clothing) and a set of flag-raising hand clothes (men’s clothing), which were designed by Wu Haiyan, a professor at the School of Design Art, China Academy of Art.
What great secrets are hidden behind the small clothes? Let’s reveal the details behind the design together.
Full of oriental charm
Hangzhou elements present the style and style of a great country
The unique beauty of Hangzhou
The clothing released this time is full of oriental charm and Hangzhou elements.
Take the Asian Games award ceremony attire as an example. The Chinese-style cheongsam lapel is combined with the Western-style slit skirt, and the Asian Games colors “rainbow purple, laurel yellow, ink white, lake and mountain green” are really beautiful.
The clothing fabrics use Hangzhou’s local element silk. When weaving, rayon is specially added to make the clothes more breathable while supporting the structure.
The clothing pattern depicts the West Lake scenery such as Orioles in the Willows, Twin Peaks in the Clouds, and Leifeng Pagoda. It is connected in series by a shuttle cloud line, and finally converges on the skirt to form a wavy pattern that symbolizes the Qiantang River, urban transportation, and competitive track.
At the beginning of the design, the team did a lot of research on how to promote the exquisiteness of Hangzhou and the atmosphere of Zhejiang through clothing. “The most popular result is the West Lake.” Wu Haiyan, president of the Zhejiang Provincial Creative Design Association, said that during the survey, the team found that Hangzhou citizens very much hope to convey the concept of the city through the design of the Asian Games.
“As times and languages change, we often have buzzwords and popular patterns generated by buzzwords. We combine the fusion patterns from the ‘West Lake Era’ to the ‘Qianjiang Era’, as well as local fabrics, weaving, blooming, etc. The design technique hopes to show the world the style of a great country and the unique beauty of Hangzhou.”
Use modern craftsmanship to show the essence of tradition
Although the awards ceremonial clothing comes in many colors, it does not look out of place. The secret lies in “dyeing”. The clothes are colored using the rendering technique used in dyeing. Each piece is hand-dyed by the garment master. Therefore, each piece of the final product is slightly different and unique.
“The Hangzhou Asian Games color system has six gradient colors. If you just pile them on a piece of clothing, it will look fancy.” Wu Haiyan said.
There are many “dying” techniques in traditional Chinese hand-painting, such as dip dyeing, rendering, blooming, etc., which are also involved in the dyeing and weaving profession. “I feel that only through dyeing can we show the unique warm charm of Hangzhou. This charm may be the morning and evening of West Lake, spring, summer, autumn and winter, or the hazy changes between clouds and water.”
The pattern of the “Yunshu Xiajuan” award ceremony clothing was made using the traditional Chinese jacquard technique – a concave and convex pattern composed of interlaced warp and weft threads.
For the jacquard style alone, the team spent three months and tried eight different styles, just to find the perfect texture to present the Hangzhou landscape.
“In this pattern, there are more than ten texture effects. We hope to reflect the essence of traditional weaving with modern high-tech weaving technology, so we spent a lot of effort.”
Combination of traditional aesthetics and current fashion
Integrating traditional culture into current life
The design concept of “traditional activation, design transformation, and oriental paradigm” has always been the direction Wu Haiyan adheres to.
As a well-known professor and designer, Wu Haiyan has been responsible for the integrated design of clothing for the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai World Expo. She has always used her unique perspective and judgment to integrate traditional Chinese culture into current life as the concept and pursuit of design education.
At the game, the award ceremony is a commendation ceremony held for the award-winning athletes. It is one of the most solemn and enthusiastic moments of the sports event, and it is also the most exciting and glorious moment for the award-winning athletes. To put it simply, this outfit will appear as many times as there are gold medals.
“Chinese culture has thousands of years of history, and there are many aesthetics in clothing, which are different in each period. Today, everyone is advocating the ‘national trend’, which is actually an aesthetic combination of traditional aesthetics and current fashion.”
Wu Haiyan said: “Today we designed such a set of clothing in the hope that…At the most anticipated moment, through the ceremonial attire of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the national culture, contemporary style and charm of the host country and the host city are shown to the audiences at the scene and in front of the screen. ”
