Sea-island fiber is a polymer dispersed in another polymer. The dispersed phase in the cross-section of the fiber is in an “island” state, while the matrix is equivalent to the “sea”. 根据纤维的一般分类，海岛纤维分离后，单丝纤度仅0.05D，属超细纤维，常规纺丝不可能做到，因此它具有一般纤维不可能有的特性。

随着纤维纤度的降低，直径变细，单位重量纤维的表面积增加。随着表面积的增加，纤维的覆盖能力增加，吸湿性能大大改善。
b. Soft to the touch and comfortable to wear:<br /
由于纤维超细，纤维更加柔软，制成织物，可产生毛细管的芯吸作用，使织物吸附更多水分，并可将这些水分移至织物表面，使其蒸发，增加了穿着的舒适感。

超细纤维的直径越小，纤维的曲率半径越大，其表面反射的散射光占的比例越大，使织物表面的色调比较柔和。
通过织物的设计加工，利用海岛纤维极度的细纤化特点，可以获得许多特殊的织物风格，如仿羊绒、仿麂皮、超高密织物等。这类织物可广泛运用于服装、服饰领域、箱包、室内用品及产业领域等。
利用海岛纤维开发的仿麂皮绒织物的许多性能并不亚于天然麂皮，有许多性能甚至优于天然麂皮。其织物手感柔软，悬垂性好，质地轻薄，为真皮的一半，可织成不同厚度和重量的织物；可以进行种种表面处理，取得形形色色的表面效果。表面有书写效果，立体感好；湿热收缩变形小，具有良好的防水透气效果，织物强度高，远优于天然麂皮。
