The new spacesuit designed by MIT, which can be called the “second skin” for astronauts, is made of lightweight elastic fabric and lined with tiny muscle-shaped coils that can be connected to the spacecraft’s electrical equipment, causing the coils to shrink and become It wraps the astronaut’s body like a shrink film. Compared with traditional space suits, this tight-fitting pressurized space suit not only supports astronauts’ bodies, but also gives them greater freedom during planetary exploration. The built-in muscle coil is made of shape memory alloy, which can recover its shape when exposed to heat after being bent or deformed. The coil is combined with a tourniquet-like cuff, and an electric current is used to generate heat. Under certain temperature conditions, the coil shrinks into a remembered shape, such as a coiled spring, shrinking the cuff during the deformation process.
Chief designer Newman said that a traditional space suit is basically a balloon, providing one-third of the atmospheric pressure to allow astronauts to survive in a vacuum environment. The self-shrinking space suit uses mechanical counter-pressure to directly apply pressure to the skin without generating air pressure. The advantage of this design is that it provides greater maneuverability while reducing weight, making it easier for astronauts to conduct space exploration.
