Tianyancha information shows that the product details of a down jacket sold in Columbia Shanghai indicate that the filling is gray goose down, but it is actually gray duck down. Another down jacket is marked with fabrics of 92% polyester and 8%spandex, but it is actually 93%nylon and 7% spandex, which violates the Consumer Rights Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China. Columbia Shanghai was warned and fined 10,000 yuan by the Shanghai Xuhui District Market Supervision and Administration Bureau for making false or misleading publicity about goods or services.

It is understood that Columbia Shanghai is a subsidiary of the famous American outdoor brand Columbia in China. Its business scope mainly includes clothing, shoes and hats and warranty supplies, knitted textiles, travel and sports bags, etc. The price of its down jacket products is around 1,000 yuan. Since its establishment in 2014, Columbia Shanghai has been mainly responsible for the brand’s Chinese business. However, according to a survey by the Shanghai Huangpu District Market Supervision and Administration Bureau, most of the products sold by Canada Goose are not made of high-fill goose down with the best thermal insulation performance, but duck down with lower fill power.

In addition to Canada Goose and Columbia, which are deeply involved in false propaganda, North Face, an American outdoor sports brand that was once comparable to Canada Goose, seems not to be immune. During May of this year, Beimian was interviewed in Tianjin due to issues such as misbranding of its jacket products and poor rectification results. Although North Face claims that there is no false advertising, it cannot eliminate the impact of doubts on its products.

Cheng Weixiong, general manager of Shanghai Liangqi Brand Management Co., Ltd., said that currently many brands of down jackets on the market use duck down instead of goose down, mainly due to different costs. The cost price of duck down is lower than that of goose down, which does not rule out the possibility that some brands sell some fake and shoddy products in order to make more profits.
