How is the quality of cotton production this year?
It only took more than an hour for Li Weidong, an employee of the 5th Company of the 128th Regiment of the 7th Division, to finish harvesting 50 acres of cotton. Looking at the “big golden eggs”-like cotton bags, Li Weidong breathed a long sigh of relief.
From spring to autumn, I have been looking forward to this day. Busy and busy, there is only one goal, to grow more and better cotton.
How is the quality of cotton this year? Have cotton farmers increased production and income? As an important cotton planting area of the Corps, Huyanghe City of the Seventh Division planted nearly 2 million acres of cotton this year. How to play a demonstration and supervisory role in improving systems, strict management, and scientific and technological services? How to transform cotton production from “quantity type” to “quality type”?
On October 25, while waiting for the cotton picker to enter the ground, Li Weidong and the members of the company’s “Two Committees” who came to help estimated the cotton output: “Last year, due to the weather, the output was not ideal. This year, the cotton output is not ideal. It’s big and plentiful, and the output must be much higher than last year!”
The machine roared, and the cotton picker moved from near to far, and then from far to near. After a few back and forth, the new cotton from 50 acres of land was harvested. After carefully checking the number of cotton bales, Li Weidong said with a smile on his face: “The yield per unit is about 480 kilograms, 50 kilograms higher than last year.”
550 kilograms, 580 kilograms, 600 kilograms… Cotton bales fell to the ground one by one in the 128th Regiment and 2nd Company, setting high cotton yield records again and again.
630 kilograms! Employee Ding Quanjun broke the company’s cotton production record! “The output is high, the quality is good, and the market price is good, so the income has naturally increased significantly.” Ding Quanjun was very happy.
Harvesting quality is related to cotton quality. At the harvesting site of the second company, Chen Qingli, deputy secretary of the company’s party branch and company commander of the company management committee, was indispensable. He said that when a piece of land is to be harvested, he has to go there for actual testing. The flocculation rate must reach 95% and the defoliation rate must reach 90% before the harvest can begin. The quality of the cotton must not be affected.
“Only when cotton is of good quality can it be sold at a good price. This year we all planted it according to the Corps’ high-quality cotton standards, and the quality of the company’s cotton has generally improved. Among them, there are 1,200 acres of high-quality and high-yield standardized cotton planting demonstration areas, with a unit yield of more than 600 kilograms.” Chen Qingli explain.
Zhang Yong, deputy director of the Huyanghe Municipal Agricultural and Rural Affairs Bureau of the Seventh Division, said that this year the cotton planting area in the division city accounts for about 14% of the total area of the Corps. Judging from the current cotton public inspection situation, the proportion of third grade, fiber length, and breakage ratio Strength and other important quality indicators are ranked at the forefront of the Corps.
How did the Seventh Division Huyanghe City achieve both improved cotton output and quality?
“To achieve high yield and high efficiency, we start from the source.” Zhang Yong said that the city attaches great importance to cotton quality and has made great efforts in key aspects such as system construction, variety control, and scientific and technological services.
The variety of cotton will inevitably lead to a decline in quality. In response to this problem, Huyanghe City of the Seventh Division this year established a cotton planting variety access system based on a sound cotton quality improvement system to effectively solve the problem of many and mixed cotton varieties.
“Three kinds of seeds, seven points of management”, the Seventh Division Huyanghe City explores innovative cotton management methods, changing the long-standing traditional quantitative planting model of “one film and six rows” of “short, dense and early” to one film and three rows. The quality-based planting model of “Broad, Early, and Excellent” has solidly implemented various measures for cotton quality control, effectively improving cotton yield and quality.
The Seventh Division Huyanghe City has a large cotton planting area and many cotton planting households. How can it play a demonstration and supervisory role in strict management and scientific and technological services?
“Cotton has high yield and high quality, and the creation of the ‘Five Fields’ has played a big role.” Feng Zhichao, Secretary of the Party Branch of the Huyanghe Agricultural Technology Extension Station of the Seventh Division, said, “From sowing to harvesting, we have made cotton farmers look good. Learn and work hard.”
The creation of “Five Fields” is a demonstration activity on the theme of efficient cotton planting carried out by Huyanghe City of the Seventh Division. This year, the division and city implemented the “Five Fields” creation activities in the cotton planting areas of each regiment, including “political commissar high-quality and high-yield demonstration fields, regimental leaders’ high-yield research fields, in-charge regimental leaders’ science and technology demonstration fields, company’s main leader demonstration fields and seed industry company display fields”. Strengthen the construction of the technical service system and focus on demonstration leadership and implementation of key technologies.
This year, the Seventh Division’s “Five Fields” in Huyanghe City covered a total area of 82,000 acres, involving 151 companies, demonstrating and leading employees to efficiently plant 1.85 million acres of cotton, effectively promoting the improvement of cotton production quality and efficiency.
