Weifang, Shandong Province was awarded the title of “City of Handicrafts and Folk Art” by UNESCO
The reporter learned from the Weifang Municipal Government of Shandong Province on the 8th that Weifang successfully joined the UNESCO “Creative Cities Network” and was awarded the title of “City of Handicrafts and Folk Art”.
It is understood that Weifang currently has 2 handicrafts and folk arts included in the UNESCO “Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” list, and 10 of the 17 national intangible cultural heritage items are handicrafts and folk arts. In terms of items, more than 200 traditional crafts such as kites, New Year paintings, nuclear carvings, silver-inlaid lacquerware, and silk are still alive in the contemporary era.
UNESCO founded the “Creative Cities Network” in 2004, which is dedicated to giving full play to the role of the global creative industry in promoting the economy and society. It is divided into “Cities of Crafts and Folk Art”, “Cities of Literature” and “Cities of Film” “Design City”, “Music City” and other 7 categories.
