Suzhou embroidery craftsmen present gifts to the Beijing Winter Olympics, realizing the cross-border integration of art and sports
The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is underway. Many embroidery craftsmen from Suzhou have presented gifts to the Beijing Winter Olympics, interpreting the Olympic spirit from an artistic perspective and realizing the cross-border integration of art and sports.
Figure skaters’ costumes are embellished with Suzhou embroidery
Figure skating is a fusion of competition and art, and athletes’ clothing must also be beautiful. At the finals of the figure skating team competition, the competition costume worn by Chinese player Peng Cheng was inspired by ink landscape elements. It used traditional tie-dye technology to reflect the feeling of ink gradient, and also incorporated the art of Suzhou embroidery. If you look carefully, you can see Suzhou embroidered peonies blooming poetically on the competition clothes. The Su embroidery on this garment adopts stitching methods such as flat stitch, loose stitch, and cross stitch, using silk thread and silver thread, from thick to thin, from deep to light, and is very delicate. It is understood that the Su embroidery elements on this competition uniform came from the team of Suzhou Yao Qinhua Embroidery Art Museum.
The team of Yao Qinhua Embroidery Art Museum was entrusted by Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology to assist the project team in researching figure skating competition uniforms. It is understood that in previous international competitions, Chinese figure skaters mostly relied on imported competition clothing. This is the first time that competition clothing has been produced in China. The design of figure skating uniforms not only requires familiarity with the dances and music styles of the competition, but also takes into account each athlete’s figure, personality, aesthetics, etc., usually while designing, colliding, and fitting. This is full of challenges and unknowns for the teams involved in the project.
Yao Qinhua introduced that Su embroidery is used to decorate competition uniforms. The finished product must not only ensure that athletes can move widely, but also enhance artistic expression. Fashion designers use highly elastic fabrics, and many of them are mesh, which is not conducive to embroidery. To this end, Yao Qinhua’s embroidery art team has made a lot of innovations and tried different stitching methods and silk threads, thus overcoming difficulties one after another.
Suzhou embroidery fan is integrated into the Beijing Winter Olympics elements
Lu Meihong, a researcher-level senior arts and crafts artist and Jiangsu Province arts and crafts celebrity, was entrusted by a designated supplier of Olympic gifts in Beijing to participate in the design of three Suzhou embroidery fans. “Su embroidery is quiet and classical, while the sports of the Beijing Winter Olympics are passionate. This interesting contrast can exactly reflect the richness and diversity of Chinese culture, and is the perfect combination of the Olympic spirit and the exquisite and elegant Su embroidery “The collision between them.” Lu Meihong told reporters that according to this concept, the fan she participated in the design integrates international and traditional, sports and craftsmanship. The front is the Winter Olympics logo of Su embroidery, and the back is the traditional Su embroidery flower and bird pattern.
When Lu Meihong designs flower and bird patterns, she must not only focus on reflecting the traditional style, in line with the quaint temperament of the round fan, but also reflect innovation and not stick to the common Suzhou embroidery flower and bird shapes. To this end, Lu Meihong and her daughter Yu Zhujun browsed through the paintings of the past dynasties and drew inspiration from them. The final design style has both the elegance of the ancients and the fashion of today, reflecting the cultural confidence of Su embroidery art and is consistent with the art of Suzhou embroidery. It is consistent with the fighting spirit of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
