European silk industry proposes future financing plan

The European silk industry hopes to obtain investment to conduct research to improve the quality of its raw materials and establish a source of raw materials that can replace mainland China.
The “Towards European Sericulture” plan, based on financing from the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), was announced at a seminar on opportunities in the textile and fashion industry.
Philippede Montgrand, president of the International Association of Users of Artificial and Synthetic Silk Yarns and Natural Silk (AIUFFAS, International Association of Users of Artificial and Synthetic Filament Yarns and of Natural Silk), said that the silk industry has a long tradition in Europe and is also combined with strong innovation capabilities. About 200 small and medium-sized enterprises producing silk are concentrated in Lombardy, Italy and Rhône-Alpes, France, providing 20,000 direct employment opportunities.
At present, the supply of raw silk mainly relies on mainland China-European Union fashion brands and silk manufacturers are worried about long-term dependence on imports of high-quality raw silk and the risk of supply shortages.
This plan aims to combine research and investment to develop a sustainable sericulture and silk reeling industry in Europe – this is the view based on preliminary research conducted by Marzotto SpA, Ratti SpA and the Silk Research Center.
At this stage, the European silk industry is seeking support from the EU in research and development and skills development, as well as financing support for this industry.
