/Myanmar’s clothing exports to the EU will exceed US$100 million
According to a report by the Global New Light of Myanmar on May 13, the Myanmar Garment Processing Association and the French Textile and Apparel Association (Evalliance) cooperated to promote the export of Myanmar textiles in the 2016/17 fiscal year. Evalliance Chairman Jean Francois Limantour predicts that EU clothing imports from Myanmar will double in 2017. The cooperation package includes creating new jobs, increasing product production and Myanmar’s reliance on raw materials from other countries. Limantur also expressed his belief that Myanmar will realize the huge potential of the competitiveness of its garment industry amid the prospect of growing exports to the EU. “Myanmar’s political transformation is important for attracting the EU textile market to cooperate and increase investment in Myanmar,” he said. The memorandum of understanding signed between the two associations last year brought Myanmar’s total apparel exports to US$450 million.
