Bangladesh Supreme Court orders demolition of BGMEA building
According to a report by Financial Express on June 6, the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh recently announced that it upheld the High Court’s decision to demolish the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building, requiring BGMEA to demolish the building within 90 days. 15-storey office tower in the heart of Dhaka, thus ending the long-running litigation. On April 3, 2011, the Bangladesh High Court ruled that the BGMEA office building involved forged documents and illegal land reclamation and should be demolished. Subsequently, BGMEA appealed to the Supreme Court. It took the Supreme Court five years to make a decision to uphold the original verdict. The location of the BGMEA building was originally part of the Begunbari-Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka. It was used for flood storage and the development of water sports in the municipal development plan.
