Madagascar’s textile industry continues to grow

According to Madagascar’s “Express” report, on the occasion of preparations for the 6th African Textile Industry Exhibition (ORIGINAFRICA), the Madagascar Duty Free and Cooperative Enterprises Association (FEFP) and the Madagascar Economic Development Board (EDBM) issued a joint communique. The communiqué shows that Madagascar’s textile industry has a good momentum of development. The EU is Madagascar’s largest export destination for textiles. In 2015, Madagascar’s textile exports were to 28 EU countries, with an export value of US$360 million. Since Madagascar became a beneficiary of the US “African Growth and Opportunity Act” (AGOA) in 2014, Madagascar’s textile exports to the US market have grown rapidly. In 2015, Madagascar’s textile exports to the United States were US$60 million; from January to July 2016, exports reached US$55 million, an increase of 150% over the same period in 2015.

In 2008, Madagascar once became Africa’s largest exporter of textiles and clothing. The political crisis that broke out in 2009 dealt a heavy blow to Madagascar’s textile industry. The 6th African Textile Industry Exhibition held in Madagascar in November 2016 will create good opportunities for Madagascar to revitalize the textile industry.
