Northern Xinjiang: Enthusiasm for cotton planting is high, but there are variables in cotton planting area in the new year

As the temperature gradually rises, the ice and snow in the farmland in northern Xinjiang have completely melted. To ensure the smooth start of spring plowing in mid-April, local farmers are busy purchasing production materials and maintaining agricultural machinery and equipment.

Recently, reporters conducted surveys in many places in northern Xinjiang and learned that Xinjiang cotton farmers’ profits are generally higher in 2021, which will drive enthusiasm for planting this year. As the degree of mechanization of picking increases year by year, the problem of labor shortage has basically been solved, and cotton planting has become the first choice of local farmers. However, there are still variables whether the cotton planting area can increase in the new year.

First of all, under the policy of using water to determine land and returning farmland to forests, the increase in land has reached the “ceiling”; secondly, affected by factors such as the epidemic and the situation in Russia and Ukraine, the importance of food has once again become prominent. Driven by the policy support and guidance of relevant departments and the rise in international bulk commodities such as grain and oil, the income of grain growers has further increased. Therefore, it is still uncertain whether the cotton sown area in Xinjiang will increase in the new year.
