Xinjiang: The weather is good and cotton fields have sporadic emergence
The whole year begins with spring. In April, spring sowing of cotton in Xinjiang begins. Unmanned seeders in fields lay mulch film in an orderly manner and sow seeds accurately. The weather conditions in Xinjiang are good this year, and most areas have started spring plowing and sowing according to established plans. Sporadic early-sown cotton fields have begun to emerge in places such as the Eighth Agricultural Division and the Seventh Agricultural Division in northern Xinjiang, as well as Kashgar in southern Xinjiang, indicating that the spring sowing of cotton in Xinjiang in 2022 has made a good start.
In response to the call to improve quality and efficiency, the use of new cotton planting technologies in Xinjiang continues to expand, and large-scale, mechanized, and intensive cotton planting has become the contemporary mainstream. According to the cotton picking results in Xinjiang last year, the proportion of cotton picked by machines in Xinjiang in 2021 has exceeded 90% of the total cotton in Xinjiang. The development of Xinjiang cotton from production mechanization to harvesting mechanization has further reduced the input costs of cotton farmers, thus increasing their income and stimulating their enthusiasm for planting. According to the National Cotton Market Monitoring System, a nationwide cotton planting intention survey was launched in mid-to-late March. In 2022, China’s intended cotton planting area is 43.98 million acres, a year-on-year increase of 789,000 acres, or 1.8%. Among them, Xinjiang’s intended cotton planting area is 36.390 million acres, a year-on-year increase of 2.3%.
During the cotton sowing period in 2021, extreme weather occurred many times in Xinjiang, which had a certain impact on spring plowing production. In particular, the late spring cold and snowfall in northern Xinjiang, as well as the strong winds and sandstorms in southern Xinjiang, have caused some cotton farmers to replant multiple times, resulting in slow growth of cotton. Cotton farmers have repeatedly purchased and invested in seeds, mulch film and other materials, which has left a profound impact on the industry. The weather in Xinjiang has been good this year. Since the spring sowing, most areas have had moderate temperatures and no large-scale extreme disastrous weather has occurred. According to feedback from some growers in Changji and Shihezi, the temperature in some areas of northern Xinjiang remained at 9-29 degrees in late April. Although the temperature difference between day and night is large, the daytime temperature is relatively high. Some farmers drip water immediately after sowing, so cotton seedlings emerge earlier than in previous years. Early-emergent cotton can grow 1-2 more fruit branches than normal-emergent cotton plants, increasing the number of bolls per cotton plant. Early emergence is also common in some warm areas of Kashgar and Aksu in southern Xinjiang.
According to recent surveys, due to precise and rapid sowing, most cotton sowing in Xinjiang can be completed by the end of April. If the weather continues to be good this year, the cotton yield is bound to be better than last year, which will lay a solid foundation for this year’s cotton harvest.
